By no means are they mutually exclusive; Worth's shoppers and blog readers - an intelligent lot - have surely noticed the slowdown in "new posts" around here. Usually, by this time, Spring/Summer arrivals are being unpacked, photographed and documented with thought and care - a process that we've enjoyed since this blog's inception nearly 1 year ago. Initially developed as a supplemental means of merchandising - a tool to improve sales - our blog has evolved, acting more like a direct portal into the minds at Worth.

Back to the slowdown. As many of our shoppers & readers already know, after a very difficult year, we're left with no option but to shut our doors (exact closing date yet to be determined). Despite having to relay this sad news, we'd also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support over these past few years. It's been inspiring to work for a company which has made no compromises in realizing its vision. Without all of the support, this wouldn't have been possible.

So what now? How about this. Absolutely every piece of clothing at Worth is AT LEAST 70% off. If you'd like to make one more visit to the store, we'd suggest that you do it soon, as stock is going fast. For news on future developments, keep checking the blog. You've got a friend in us!

This jacket, by Amsterdam's Blue Blood, is for the denim obsessed; the way its cut, its construction, wash and detail-level go far beyond any "jean jacket" that I've ever had the pleasure of encountering; and believe me, I take pleasure in such encounters. As was the case last spring/summer, I foresee denim jackets playing a key role in any smartly dressed man/woman's wardrobe for the duration of Calgary's warm-time. Personally, I like a denim jacket - especially one that's worn(washed) so beautifully - coupled with khaki pants OR shorts. Add a plain white T, or a bright madras button-up for a really laid-back, classic look. Love denim as much as I do? Then you may want to pair this jacket with jeans for the denim-on-denim look, which is great, as long as the pants and jacket work harmoniously in the cut and wash department. Waist-down considerations aside, denim jackets also look great layered beneath an overcoat. The possibilities are endless. This Week in Men's Fashion Evolution

So, what direction is men's fashion headed? It's hard to say.

Based on what we've recently seen strutting down Parisian and Milanese runways, this fall, some guys will be brutish, while others will be perfect gentlemen - save for the odd hi-tech corset, or leggings/sandals/kilt (all black) combination. Leather will be everywhere - boots even more so. The (non)colour will be black, and warmth will be provided by shearling and goose-down. In a somewhat contradictory way, we sentimental types will wear ribbed-knits and boxy double-breasted jackets, which, to me are looking more 90's than 80's this season, as well as WWII era military everything (shearling, shearling, shearling). Finally, the turtleneck. The turtleneck will be stylishly polishing adam's apples everywhere EXCEPT ski resorts.

Soft, flowing style engages local designer

Who knew that a computer engineer could create sexy off-the-shoulder cocktail dresses that would make a glamour girl blush? Nina Rahal-Kharey, designer for her own label House of Nonie, is achieving exactly that.

Rahal-Kharey has had a knack for designing and sketching since junior high school, but decided on pursuing a more reliable profession -- until a few years ago.

"I lost my brother to violence, which was my trigger to listen to myself and do what I love doing," she says. Sketching was her therapy for coping with his loss.

Rahal-Kharey debuted her Spring 2010 collection at Alberta Fashion Week last fall, featuring short, flowing dresses with a signature one sleeve, and sari influence in draping.

For 2010, Rahal-Kharey plans on taking her local success to Montreal and New York. And you can be the first to check out her Fall/ Winter 2010 collection at Alberta Fashion Week in March.

"I've met so many great people, and am now looking for an agent. Designing is something that I love and hope to do it full time."

She would best describe her style as:

Crazy. "I will try and put different pieces together that most wouldn't wear, and try to make it work."

Definition of Nonie:

"Nonie is my nickname, it was a love name that my dad gave me when I was born."

"Very natural, organic and flowing. I use lots of silks and chiffons, and I always include a tutu in my collections, because it's so feminine and classic."

Style evolution:

Rahal-Kharey transformed her style from classic suits and dresses to risk-taking with colour and dabbling with elements of punk rock.

A Chanel Classic Flap handbag is a fashion investment that Rahal-Kharey says will last her a lifetime.

A pair of leg warmers. "My legs are not long enough."

Along with their overwhelmingly soft-looking grey cat "Potato", the design duo have opened the doors to their lovely home, providing a rich visual representation of the place where these creative minds rest their....minds? Street-Style Round-Up pt. 2

When it comes to clothing combinations, I've always known what I like, but I haven't always been able to explain why. Now, after a about a year working alongside Carl and my scrutineer of a sister, the separate elements which can make up "great style" have become easier for me to identify. Below are some looks that Carl and I chose from various places around the 'net, which showcase style in ways that we really admire. Check it out!

Liam's Pick:

I really like how this guy combines impactful colour with a sun-bleached sensibility, creating an all-'round natural look. Also, the uneven sleeve rolls and the layered sheer tops beneath his jacket look easy-going.

This look goes all the way. Whether it's goth-grunge, grunge-goth, or homeless soul-siphon doesn't matter. With this level of immersion, classification will always fall short.

I really like the "dumb" shoes. Also, I like the not-quite-navy toggle coat paired with the not-quite-peach scarf. Despite the simplicity of this look, there's depth here.

What struck us both about this gent, is the ease in which he leans against the subway wall in what's most likely, for him, an everyday-type getup. To convincingly pull off "looking bored" in a bow tie is tougher than you'd think.

First, kudos to Scott Schuman; this photos is fantastic. Now, the specifics; here's what we've got: colour, texture, patterns and layering-not unlike a great-tasting 5-layer dip. The difference is, while the aforementioned snack is delicious, it looks like decomposition. This on the other hand, looks masterful(in a really unthreatening way). And how about that smile? Talk about an accessory rarely seen on fashion blogs.

Okay, so this guy's expression isn't as welcoming, however, the way in which he employs complimentary patterns (perfect scale) , colour and what appears to be cerebral might is alluring all the same. My advice-talk strategy, any strategy with this guy.

Abad pieced together his 15-year-old new Republic vest, nearly-as-old J. Lindeberg pants, John Fluevog shoes and a The Cast scarf from his store, Worth.

"I'm reintroducing old pieces from my wardrobe to make a new look, which is what people have to do."

- His advice:

Abad recommends women "accessorize with anything black and shiny--patent, satin and sequins."

Men who want to look polished should consider wearing a tie and vest, he says.

"(You can) dress it down with denim for casual events and do a three-piece suit for formal," says Abad.

Large-scale, grommet-pierced canvases sucked flush to the wall, exuding brilliant colours and patterns showcase beautifully Patrick Lundeen's skills as a painter, while the subject matter, an unmistakable mixture of pop-culture and religious iconography shouts (screams perhaps?) playful contradiction. I found this show to be very inspiring.

Calgary International Film Fest After Dark

For ten years, The Calgary International Film Festival has brought screen gems from around the world to our fair city, and this year was no exception. Thanks to my sister's savvy, and friend of Worth, Brenda Lieberman (Programmer-World Cinema / Late Nights), who kindly dropped off some tickets at the store, I was able to take in a couple of the "late night" selections, both of which were highly enjoyable.

First up: Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, the latest film from Japan's gore/makeup/comedy visionary Yoshihiro Nishimura. Visually, this film is absolutely frenetic in its on-screen energy, which is often soaked to the bone(exposed) with blood, guts, lightning, and cuteness. It's amazing how along with the outdated looking C.G.I. , classic rubber and spirit glue makeup and karaoke quality soundtrack, director Yoshihiro Nishimura is able to offer some interesting commentary on various segments of Japanese culture. If it's been too long since you've had your jar jolted, check this, or any of Yoshihiro's newish films out, but be warned, with mechanism-free digital effects, the blood sprayers pump ad nauseam.

Next, the equally campy, but far more "traditional" blood-fest "Smash, Cut", which as the director, Lee Demarbre, who was in attendance noted, pays homage to the early works of Herschell Gordon Lewis (also featured in the film), a pioneer of the genre. Carl and I had fun at this one, which wrapped with a Q&A period featuring cast members including horror vets David Hess and Michael Barryman!

OK, so that concludes the bloodiest Worth Blog Post in history. If gore's not your thing, I can't blame you, and I apologize. This year, late-night is what my viewing schedule permitted.

Movie Mondays

With Mondays being blaaaah for most of us out there I offer some relief in the form of movies(how you enhance the movie is up to you). Strolling through Bird Dog Video, my favorite video joint, I can always count on the staff to offer up some great suggestions to delight my senses or escapism depending on how you look at it. This past weekend two movies were brought to my attention and with the "staff picks" tag on them how can I say no! Splinter recommended by Jim and Nerdcore Rising by Jacklyn were both very entertaining and a great way to end the "blaaah" of Monday.

It came eventually on the eve of Sept 26th 2009; Worth's staff Christmas party for the year 2008!

As you can tell by the above photos (official), fun was had by all! On behalf of the staff at Worth, I'd like to thank Carl, as well as the kindly folks at Local 510 for feeding, drinking, and drunkening us. It was fantastic.

Now for something bizarre. A Japanese television ad for everyone's favorite hangover food.

The fashion crowd moves fast. From New York to London and now Milan, the spring/summer 2010 looks are on full display. Unfortunately, between course readings and paper proposals I can't quite keep up, so you must forgive my fashion faux pas as I fill you in on London.....a week late.

The London catwalk saw designs from all realms this season. Chirstopher Kane, most recently of the ubiquitous screaming safari shirts, seen on editors and ingenues alike, changed gears, showing muted gingham creations of all varieties, while Paul Smith was a real wild child, with his twists, ties and layers, and of course the artful draping in luxe sherbet colours that made an appearance courtesy of the quintessential Brit brand, Burberry.

Once again, my favourite show was from a relatively new up and comer, Erdem. I must confess that I am not normally a fan of spring/summer, but his ultra-feminine frocks have me re-thinking my fall favouritism.

Now normally, flower appliqué and taffeta with a lace overlay would conjure up bridesmaid images of the worst kind, but in this case, Erdem blew that all away with his subtle take on surrealism. From the shoes to the glasses and of course the dresses, he doesn't miss a beat. With that said, I am already looking forward to Erdem's vision for fall.

New Fall Looks!

Just as things are starting to cool off in this city we've received our fall shipment of Lilly & Jae, which includes two very cozy coats, as well as a few pieces from our new denim line, Blue Blood. For the men, we brought in a hand distressed jean jacket, from Blue Blood's designer label, Avelon, that looks like a well worn hand-me-down from your favourite Uncle. Just the way we like it!

Currently, Worth is made up of one ACAD alumnus, plus a couple of siblings who are proud to have artists for parents, which is why we're excited to promote "SPAWN"- a fundraiser, art exhibit and all-around "monster bash" organized by EAR (Elephant Artist Relief).

On the eve of Saturday, October 3rd, after a week long exhibit at the Arrata Opera Centre, artwork will be up for auction, and bands will be roaring on-stage. Click on the above flyer for more.

New Arrivals: Patina Designs

Here we have some totable artistry by a veteran Portobello West exhibitor, Denise Wilson, whose handcrafted leather bags are beautiful in their simplicity. Much of the inspiration behind Patina Designs comes from traveling to, and living in different parts of Europe, where Denise soaks up the local culture, until her eventual return to Vancouver, where the bags are individually produced by hand.

As it does every year, the Portobello West market, which took place this past weekend, brought some very talented artisans and designers into Calgary, many of whom stopped by the store to say hello. One of Worth's visitors, Trudy Wynans, the designer and producer of Vancouver's TOODLEBUNNY jewelry, presented us with her new collection, which we had to have.

Montreal may have the poutine market cornered, Vancouver specializing in sushi, but Calgary, we've got a stronghold on Canada's premier Vietnamese food. Period. The best of the best in the Vietnamese game is mere steps from Worth. Golden Bell (1112-17th Ave SW) serves up a sub so spicy it will make your mind sweat, vermicelli dishes stacked with spring rolls, and the best pho broth this side of Hanoi. Of course you will need a frosted mug of tsingtao to wash it all down! Don't worry fellow vegetarians they have delicious options for you too.

Eating Golden Bell has become a lunchtime religion at Worth that never fails to fill without the feeling of busting a gut geyser when all is said and done. Also, the prices are great the staff even better. Here, take a look for yourself.

Before ever looking at his clothes, I was seeing photos and reading the name of Michael Bastian. A lot. "What an elegant, laid back guy he looks like" I thought. With further investigation, it wasn't long before I associated Michael Bastian's name with ultra-luxury, but still, I hadn't really seen his clothes. Cue New York fashion week.

What really impresses me about this collection is how varied it is. To show ragged cut-off shorts alongside hyper-tailored 3 piece pinstripes could be disastrous, however, with an overall dose of classic masculinity like this, each look could be rubbing shoulders, inseams, or cuffs in one man's (the ultimate man's) closet. This is what I like to see from American menswear designers.

Among other things, NY Fashion Week has become an international forum for designers to display representations and evolving interpretations of American fashion. While men's fashion has taken a turn for the traditional, the up and coming women's designers are taking some risks and redefining Americana along the way.

The Spring/Summer 2010 collections featured aquatic references from Proenza Schouler, stage beauty at Marc Jacobs, and Alexander Wang's take on downtown sportswear. While perhaps not the most wearable collection, my favorite look for the season came from the Mulleavy sisters at Rodarte. This post-apocalyptic trip to Death valley features next level textile combinations, warrior arm bands and dresses dripping with wool. What more can you ask for?
