For everyday, inspired by runway

Men's Spring/Summer 2010 fashion week kicked off in Milan this last week, and from what I can tell, all bets are off. So far, this season has featured looks from the mundane to the magnificent, which, with a little thought, can be translated from the super styling of the runway to any man's wardrobe. After all, any fashionable man knows that a collection isn't complete without jackets and coats for all occasions. Judging by the endless variations that have graced the Italian catwalks, this style tip is a sure thing. Come check out the choices featured below and more, on sale and in store now!

COMING SOON TO WORTH: LOVER!!

With summer sales on the brain, I have to ask that you to switch gears for a moment to fill you in on our newest fashion obsession; Lover. This label is making its way to Worth from the sun and surf of Australia, just in time to fill out your fall wardrobe. Lover design duo, Susien Chong and Nic Briand have combined their unique vision and sense of style to create a brand that has amassed a horde of diehard fanatics, creating a cult status among those in the know. These real life lovers describe the line as a, "mix and match of [their] favorite heros, muses, films, and songs." So ladies, if this sounds at all up your alley, start clearing room in your fall lineup for an exquisite leather and wool letterman jacket, zulu print circle skirt or perhaps the velvet dress.

Worth-Less sale men's picks

It's back! The Worth-Less sale is in full swing, with some great deals on some key summer pieces. Here are a couple of selections for the guys.

Talk about a desirable jacket, this canvas parka by Conference of Birds, which was produced for up-and-coming designer Andrew Holden's second collection simultaneously channels a smart Mod silhouette with colours and fabric suited for the African Savanna.

-100% cotton parka by Conference of Birds $920 SALE $429

Next, I've selected this shirt by Orthodox, simply because it's absolutely ideal for Summer. Somehow, this shirt manages to feel cool and loose despite its close cut. Also, the fabric is nicely textured with a crinkled check.

-Shirt by Orthodox $198 SALE $157

The Worth-Less Sale Picks

The Worth-Less Sale has begun and I've spent the afternoon scoping out picks to stock up my summer wardrobe. I know what you're thinking, you work at Worth you get the discount already, but the reality of it all is that even though we get the discount, us shopaholics still have to control ourselves but now that the Worth-Less Sale is on, my bank account is open to a little discount shopping.

I've been eying the organic cotton Josh Podoll t-shirt (Down from $76 to $66) in the picture above teamed with the shorts from BNX (Down from $180 to $126). It's finally warm out in Calgary and I want nothing more than to be comfortable.

Keeping in theme with comfort, again Josh Podoll has my heart. The tunic pictured above is again very light and again organic cotton (Down from $210 to $147).

I'm really a big fan of Josh Podoll, as a sucker for romance I was very intrigued by how the company started in the first place. Josh Podoll the label is a husband and wife team who basically came together through the vision of organic fashion. You can read the story (here).

Anyways I'm off to try on some clothing, you better get here quick before I scoop it all up!

Have a great weekend guys!

You Make Loving Fun

Just the other night, I found myself sitting, smiling, getting sore legs, then, finally, with enough coaxing, I was standing, clapping, nodding and swaying. My companions? Thousands of baby-boomers, including my Mom and my Uncle. If this all seems familiar, perhaps you were there too; watching Fleetwood Mac live at the Saddledome I mean.

Instead of going into great detail and analyzing every bit of the 150ish minute performance of a lifetime, I'd prefer to share with you an important lesson, which goes as follows: "music is THE secret to everlasting youth". I say this, because not only was the energy projected by Stevie and company as electric as lightning striking the clock tower, their worshipping followers, most of whom are classroom trained in nuclear strike survival (think Cuban missile crisis), were out-screaming and out-moving me all night long. In some ways, i felt like the dad chaperoning a group of excitable teenagers. You party well, baby-boomers! Stupidly, I'd forgotten you had it in you.

Samantha Reed

The newest edition to to the Worth collection comes courtesy of Calgarian designer and ACAD graduate, Samantha Reed. Well versed in her knowledge of textiles and technique, both pieces from the collection, Ethereal Beauty, were born from a rectangular form of layered silk and wool blend with felted finish and all natural nature dyes. Reed describes her work as a, "novel use of traditional technique to construct original textiles into elegant, unique garments." This is one collection that really lives up to its name, so come in and admire these one of a kind treasures in person before this up and comer takes her talent to the Glasgow School of Arts.

"BEDTIMING"

Although this blog is fairly new, we've received a lot of great feedback from friends and clients who visit here regularly for all kinds of store-related news and updates. Besides posting the obvious; photos and features about sales and the labels that we carry, we also like to highlight the various projects being undertaken by our talented friends.

Here for your listening pleasure is a really sleepy mix by our friend and resident DJ Ted Stenson (aka Teddy Celebration).

Follow the link to download a mix so serene, it makes underwater whale calls sound like a V12 with a headphone jack.

Liam's Pick of the Day

The interesting thing about body language, is that unlike spoken language, it can be interpreted by anybody, really quickly, for better or worse. If you've ever been wrongfully accused of looking grumpy, or confrontational simply because of your posture, or blank-staring facial expression, this cardigan is for you, as it converts body language to sunbeams.

As Morgan demonstrates above, this piece looks great buttoned-up and worn with a skirt, or perhaps, even better opened and layered over a favorite heather-grey t-shirt with washed, roomy (aka boyfriend) jeans with a cuff, and black peep-toe heels.

67% silk, 33% cotton cardigan in red by Y.M.C $325.00

Visual Love

Shane Michael Haltman is a Canadian born contemporary self taught artist who currently has two pieces (Geologica, ($800) and Panda ($450) up for display at A Store Called Worth.

Born in 1975, Shane fuels his creative fire from the dynamic world in which we all live. His work is somewhat of a paintamentary, a documentary that mainly utilizes paint as it’s medium.

Shane’s work has been shown in Vancouver, New York and Calgary and Europe this summer.

"My paintings are directly correlated to my journey through life. Led by an unbridled curiosity, I do have a lofty range of subject matter and style. In order to manage this, experience has taught me that each subject requires it’s own set of rules. When I want to articulate an experience, I go to abstraction. Abstraction to me is the purest form of thought, and when properly channeled speaks a certain truth that I am unable to achieve with realism."

"Slowly I have evolved to combine abstraction and realism. This has allowed me to weave together reality, as we sense it in the world, and thought, which we cannot see. The interaction of the two creates a powerful dialogue between the painting and the viewer. The subject matter for my paintementary has led to a series on one of the worlds most interesting people, Barrack Obama. As time passes the dialogue amongst the public has varied concerning Obama's role as president. I plan to continue to capture this fluctuation in polls, with the hope of portraying the weight that comes with being the president, as well as putting the viewer in Obama's shoes, which is a very tall order indeed."

The Prairies, Parisian style

Last night by the time the clouds had cleared I was well on my way to the most enchanting outdoor dinner party this side of the French Riviera, hosted by our friend, the ever fashionable Emily. Guests settled in under a white canopy and candle light while champagne flowed as freely as the conversation. Coq au vin, potato and asparagus gratin, and french bread were served for the main while strawberry rhubarb jam, whipped butter, custard tarts and berries followed.
With a menu that would make Marie Antoinette's mouth water and company fit for a good time this was the perfect way to spend a summer eve indeed. You should give it a try. Trust me.
Yours, Kate
